Why Skipping Your Monday Workout Is What You Might Need

“Never miss a Monday,” they said. “No days off,” they said. Well, I’m here to tell you that skipping your Monday workout is exactly what you might need.

I have been in the position before where I thought if I never skipped a workout, despite being tired, that was the right thing to do. I never really understood the concept of “listening to your body”; however, sometimes listening to your body is what you need to be able to fuel an even better workout when you do decide the time is right for you.

Create less rules with fitness

When you create “rules” around fitness, the very act of moving your body sparks less joy and feels more like a chore. There is this feeling that you HAVE to workout on a specific day, as opposed to you GET to. Working out and moving your body should not be tied to a day or just another “task” to check off on your to-do list.

You need to get more rest

Resting our bodies is so vital to our well-being. Getting the appropriate number of hours of sleep fuels us forward and keeps us healthy. If your body is tired that means your brain is tired and you need both to function properly in a workout. The “push” you give yourself when training is only effective if you are well-rested. Exercise is stress on your body but if your body is already heightened in a stressed state due to lack of sleep, your next workout could be doing more harm than good.

Listen to your body

In the same vain as getting more rest, make sure to listen to your body’s needs. Not only if you are tired but if you are feeling ill. If you feel sick, some things just aren’t worth it to put yourself under more stress when you should be resting. Feeling sick is your body’s way of telling you that you need to create boundaries for yourself and slow down.

Add more joy in your life

If you’re not going to an event or catching up with a friend or doing something else that provides you joy, maybe try skipping your workout to go ahead and give yourself the permission to do those things. Working out is so important for your health, your wellbeing, your mental state, but if it’s a source of stress where you feel you aren’t able to live your life to its fullest capacity because you are declining experiencing other aspects of life, it might be time to take a small breather and reconnect with yourself in other areas of your life.

Remember, that a workout missed is OK. It doesn’t mean that you will fall off of your routine, you will lose all progress you’ve made; it just means you are human and are giving yourself the space you need.
